LA fair recap
May. 28th, 2026 01:11 pmi think i’ve realized two things. one, anything in public will always be overshadowed by the death of my father. the grief of thinking about all the what-ifs.... that he would’ve loved this ride, he would’ve loved the car show. that the last time we went to a fair was for my senior year floral project back in 2019. seeing families all around us, people my age and older who still have their parents...
and two, my brother and i are just different in every regard, even in the way we want to travel and spend vacation days. he’s the type to want to do everything all out at once. i’m realizing that’s basically how he approaches every part of his life, even cleaning. it’s either 200 percent or zero. so whenever we go out somewhere like this, it becomes an entire full day event. seriously, we were there from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and i think we only sat down maybe three times the whole day, and never for more than 10 minutes at a time.
maybe that sounds completely normal to other people, but i’m the exact opposite, and so is my sister. i would’ve much rather split it into two days where we’re only there for five hours max at a time, and i’d want to sit down in the shade for at least 15 minutes without feeling rushed.
it probably didn’t help that, because fair food is so freaking expensive, i was basically running on a watermelon agua fresca and a cup of esquites that i had to share with my sister since she didn’t like her pulled pork mac and cheese. (can you tell i’m still a little annoyed about it lol?)
but seriously, just my drink was 17 dollars!! seventeen !! i had only brought $50 with me, so there wasn't many options...is it obvious i don't go to fairs or any events like this ??
my sister enjoyed going into the expo halls and seeing all the vendors, but personally that was hell and my least favorite part. it’s why i hate going to swap meets... like all the vendors just staring at you or aggressively trying to get your attention. idk, my sister and brother thrived in that environment, which wasn’t surprising for my brother since he loves to talk to people, but i was very surprised my sister liked it.
there was a couple of these guys selling shoes, and the way they were approaching people was Not It and made me very nervous. i just wanted to leave... they were like manically pacing back and forth, i think to psych themselves up to talk to someone, and then no one would answer and or would walk away, and they’d start talking shit about the person to each other out loud lol. they tried to get my brother’s attention, so they kept yelling, “hey boots! boots!” and he wouldn’t turn around because he said it was disrespectful, which i gotta agree with... anyways, i hope they're not there next year if i do come back.
anyways, positives and stuff i did like and enjoy: it was nice to get out of the house, even though i was kind of done with it halfway through lol. i liked the car rides.. they made me incredibly sleepy and just felt very relaxing since it’s been a while since i’ve driven that far away. it was nice to people-watch and just try to expose myself to a loud environment.
the food was good, at least the two items i got, and the lines didn’t take that long at all. there was also this little shop selling homemade chapsticks, lotions, and those kinds of products, and even though it was unbelievably expensive... their chapstick really works. i have chronically dehydrated and cracked lips (it’s bad... they’ll literally split open and gush sometimes when i open my mouth), and usually when i put products on my lips, they’re gone within like 20 minutes. but this one stayed on my lips for hours.
i didn’t go on any rides, which i know is the whole point for most people, but luckily no one in the group likes or cares about them, so i wasn’t pressured like i usually am. i hate to be such a party pooper, but my fear of heights is so incredibly bad that i can hardly climb up a ladder, so i’m just not gonna go on a rollercoaster, swrry.
oh, i forgot there was a sticker vendor in the expo halls, and i immediately liked them since they were playing the april fools song from icarly!! it genuinely made my day lol. i will rt and repost etc. anytime i come across that song since it’s my childhood.
and see, i do like live music sometimes... it just has to be a song or genre i actually like and feel nostalgic for.
uhm, it’s been a while since this happened and since i started writing this, so it’s harder to remember what else happened. i’m sure there was other stuff, but this is all that’s at the top of my head.
brother is already talking about going to more fairs and festivals etc. this summer, and i’m dreading it tbh. as i said above, we just don’t match in how we want to get through the day. it’s also kind of sad that the entire time i’m at an event or even a store i really wanted to try, i’m just thinking to myself, “i can’t wait to do this in the future when i’m by myself.” which isn’t the best mindset because it’s like girl... you’re here right now, just enjoy it.
